We grew up watching Michelle Kwan‘s gorgeous figure skating and revering her as if she were some kind of real-life Disney princess. With her hair always in a perfect bun topping off her glittering costumes, we probably all wanted to be her — although we wouldn’t have wanted to put in the work to get there. She started figure skating at age five, and won her first championship the very next year!
At just 17, Michelle nabbed the silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, and earned a bronze at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Even more impressive than her Olympic accolades, though, are her five World Figure Skating Championship titles, earned between 1996 and 2003. Altogether, she won a whopping 43 championships during her career, making her the most-ever decorated figure skater from the U.S.
Michelle had to withdraw from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy due to an injury, and we’ve been missing her beautiful skating ever since!
While she’s not raking in titles, she’s still accomplishing some impressive feats.
