Japanese lifestyle retailer Muji recently completed the furnishing of Narita International Airport’s Terminal 3 which is slated to open April 8. This extensive space is outfitted with around 400 comfortable sofabench units in vivid green, blue, mocha and white hues, while the cafeteria features simple oak wood tables and chairs. With the intention of hosting more low cost carriers like Jetstar, Jeju Air and Vanilla Air, the new terminal’s simple design has seating for approximately 450 and the largest food court of any airport in Japan. It also features the largest general duty-free shopping area in the airport.

What is it about that sparse geometric design that is so appealing? This is an excellent example of the modern Japanese use of space. The uniformity of height is also eye catching, with the ability to see down the hall, enhancing the openness.
