Bored Panda:

Old city buses in Hawaii are going to be converted into homeless shelters if architecture firm Group 70 International is successful. The vehicles are to operate in fleets, with different units dedicated to different purposes, from living spaces to recreation rooms.

May Ry Kim of Group 70 International told Hawaii News that the design “is based on the premise that you could walk in to a hardware store, buy everything you need in one go and build everything with no trade skills,” so that it can be built by a team of untrained volunteers.

LIFT, the volunteer organization helping to execute the project hopes to build two buses by the end of this summer. 70 buses and all the material required for renovations will be donated.

RocketNews 24:

When you’re ill or your life is in danger, it’s natural to feel gratitude towards those who aided your recovery or saved your life. But what do you do to show your gratitude?

One elderly woman from Nara Prefecture, Japan, felt so grateful to the ambulances who often help her, that she decided to donate a brand new ambulance to her local fire station. And it wasn’t just any ambulance – this was a top-of-the-line model worth 2.7 million yen (over US$22,000)!

93-year-old Fukuko Kitamuro donated the state-of-the-art ambulance to the Yoshino Town fire department as a way of saying thanks for helping her in times she was sick or injured.

What makes this ambulance special is that it has a 2,600cc engine, four-wheel-drive capabilities, a larger interior than normal ambulances, and is equipped with ventilators and other devices which would allow paramedics to perform life-saving procedures while en route to the hospital.

The local fire department already had four ambulances, but was able to replace one of its older models with the new one Ms. Kitamuro donated. The vice superintendent of the prefectural fire fighting association and the Yoshino Town mayor expressed their gratitude for the generous gift, and Japanese net users had lots of good things to say about her as well:

“Such a cool old woman!”

“I want to be like her.”

“That’s such a great way to put her assets to use.”

“What a nice old woman. I hope she lives a long life.”

Many Chinese all over the world receive red envelopes full of cash during Chinese New Year. The money is typically given by the married to children and the unmarried and is supposed to bestow good fortune on those who receive it, as our site explains. Most get around over $100 or more each year. But what if you opened a red envelope and found that you received 10,000 yuan ($1,600) out of a whopping 6.5 million yuan (over $1 million) total?

That’s what Chinese billionaire Liu Qiangdong gave out for the Spring Festival in the Jiangsu Province in Suqian City this past week. As China Smack reported, Liu Qiangdong gave out the 6.5 million yuan in red envelopes to around 650 elderly people over 60 years old in his village birthplace.

Liu Qiangdong, who is most famous for the Chinese e-commerce site JD.com, China’s second largest online mall, said:

“I grew up here, and without the care and concern of the elders of my hometown, I would not have been able to leave this village, nor would I be the person I am today.”

Liu gave the money to express good will to the elderly and so that they would have a happy new year. He also used the occasion to introduce Zhang Zetian as his “wife,”  although it’s been reported that they just got engaged. The two make up a formidable power couple; Zhang is an internet meme sensation nicknamed Milk Tea Girl, after a photo of her holding up a cup of milk tea went viral. Because of this, she is now a budding film star who just received her first role in a movie last year. They’re also infamous for their age gap; Liu is 19 years older than 21-year-old Zhang.

Japanese porn stars ‘raise thousands’ for charity by letting the public grope their boobs

Acclaim:

They don’t call JapanNippon” for no reason. A group of 9 Japanese porn stars raised 5 million yen over the weekend by baring all and letting the public fondle them for money. The squeeze-a-thon, dubbed “Boob Aid” was apart of a 24 hour Stop! AIDS campaign.

It’s a win for the 6000 men (and occasional women) who turned up to the 15 hour squeezing frenzy, and a huge win for charity, and the girls seemed all too excited about it too. “I’m really looking forward to lots of people fondling my boobs… I never thought my boobs could contribute to society”, said Rina Serina.

Hello Kitty teams up with world-renowned patissier for a worthy cause

Macaron Day (Jour du Macaron) is a charity that has been going on for nine years in France. It initially began on a small scale as Pierre Hermé’s personal project at his shop, but has since grown into a large annual charity event supported by various organizations and individuals, including many members of the Relais Dessert, an international association of top confectioners from around the world.

In France, the event is held each year in late March and the proceeds from selling the charity macarons go to the organization “Vaincre la Mucoviscidose (Conquer CF)” to support the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. The event has also spread to Japan, where it is now held on the day of the summer solstice, which this year falls on June 21. Here in Japan, the charity proceeds are donated to the “National Network to Support Children with Serious Illnesses”.

As the name suggests, the charity features the delectable macarons created by master pastry chef Pierre Hermé, but it’s also about raising money for children fighting serious diseases. And this year, our beloved Hello Kitty will be pitching in to help with the project — by becoming the PR ambassador for Macaron Day in Japan! Now, we know we’ve often described Hello Kitty as a hardcore entrepreneur who isn’t at all picky about the jobs she takes on, but this time, she’s all about seriously contributing to a good cause. But what kind of event is this Macaron Day, and how exactly did Hello Kitty become involved in it?
