HTC (Taiwan) teams up with Under Armour for a fitness wearable

HTC has announced it will be releasing its first wearable with the help of Under Armour, who will be supplying the tracking software for the fitness band. The waterproof Grip wrist band is the first in a series of co-branded products, and will feature a pedometer, GPS and an integrated “Record” tracking portal which aggregates sleep, steps, active time, distance, workouts, calories burned and weight. It can also be connected with a phone to receive and respond to notifications via the 1.8-inch curved monochrome touchscreen.

Though an official release date has yet to be announced, expect the HTC Grip to be available at select retailers in North America beginning in Spring 2015.

During my first experiences working out, whether it was a training class in college or at the gym with friends, I would always hear:

Keep your back straight.

Keep your core tight.

Make sure your knees don’t go past your ankles.

If you go to the gym, you’ve probably heard all this too. As tempting as it is to bump up the volume to your music and block everyone out, it’s actually really important to ask yourself why everyone talks about maintaining proper form. I’m absolutely no expert, nor am I claiming to be, but remembering these tips are important, especially if you’re just starting your fitness journey. After all, being sore the next day is enough pain, don’t you think?

So what exactly does proper form mean? According to Jeremy Likness at, whether you’re lifting weights at the gym or doing fun body weight workouts at home, there are a two things you should always remember.


Spinal Alignment
This is where the phrase, “keep your back straight” stems from. Your spine is what allows your body to remain upright, but it is also prone to injury. Because of this, generally, your back should be kept straight by pushing your chest out and your shoulders back. Remember when your grandmother would tell you not to slouch and would pull your shoulders back so you feel your shoulder blades squeeze together? That’s how it should feel. Oh yeah, grandma knew all about proper form.

According to Likness, keeping your back straight “minimizes stress on the spinal column, but will place tension on your lower back muscles.” This is okay, because those are the muscles you want to work and strengthen to protect your back.

Joint Alignment
Just like your spine, your joints should be aligned as well. In other words. you don’t want to look like a flailing chicken with arms or legs bent in different directions! For example, think about physical education in high school. Do you recall your P.E. teacher telling you how to do a push-up? Other than keeping your back straight, your arms should be straight. This means your shoulders should be aligned with your wrist. When you do a push up, stop at about a 90-degree angle while keeping your elbows close to your body. Keeping joints aligned, strong and being aware of your body movements can avoid injuries such as popping a bone out of place or fracturing your wrist.


From out of shape to fitness instructor in three years – one woman’s tale of reinvention

Here on the Internet, where many of us virtually live, there’s little we love more than a good tale of transformation. Whether it’s through the use of clever make-up and camera angles to achieve a gorgeous face, or whether it’s a full-body overhaul, there’s something uplifting about living vicariously through other people’s success stories.

Today we’d like to share with you the tale of one woman in China who transformed herself from couch potato to fitness instructor in just three years, losing almost half her body weight in the process.

The unnamed woman from China originally weighed close to 100 kilos (220 pounds), but over the course of three years managed to whittle herself down to just 50 kilos (110 pounds). While not too much is known about her, it seems that she managed to lose weight responsibly through exercise and upping her personal fitness, and while sudden weight loss can be just as unhealthy as sudden weight gain, with three years to do it in, it sounds like she went about her weight-loss programme fairly sensibly.

Apparently, the young woman now works as a fitness instructor and has been hailed as a “goddess of fitness” in her native China.

LG Lifeband Touch

LG becomes the latest entrant to the wearable technology craze with the unveiling of its Lifeband Touch at CES 2014. Rivaling the likes of Nike’s FuelBand, the Jawbone UP24 and a few others, the bracelet imaged above is a fitness and heath tracker that uses Bluetooth 4.0 technology to connect to its user’s Android or iOS device. Its built in sensors are able to track your movement and calories burned as well as measure heart rate with special headphones that listen to the blood flow in your ears. Moreover, the Lifeband Touch features an LED color touch screen that displays time, controls your phone’s music player as well as notifications from your phone.

Rumored to retail for $179 USD, LG’s Lifeband Touch is expected to be available something during the second quarter of 2014.

Sony SmartBand tracks your physical, social and entertainment activities

Way late in the fitness tracker game, Sony knew it had to come up with something unique in order to stand out from the growing market. If the Wellograph is designed for suits, the Sony SmartBand is designed for narcissists. Yeah, the device can track if you’ve been walking, how many calories you’ve burned etc. but it can also take note of other things you do, which you can then review on an app. It’s like taking a holistic selfie.

Sony has yet to reveal the specific capabilities of the SmartBand, but its official website indicates that the device “can see if you’ve been walking, running, cycling or travelling by train – and how you’ve slept. It also lets you see photos you’ve taken, music you’ve listened to, games you’ve played and how much you’ve socialized with a friend.”

You can then look back on how you spent your day (or days) through the Lifelog app, which seems to be an Android exclusive. The app presents your day as an interactive timeline. The timeline has icons indicating specific actions, such as when you took a picture or listened to music. Of course, you’ll also be able to view your exercise stats for the day but who cares about that when you can check out the exact hour that you Instagrammed that dramatic picture of fallen leaves last Thursday?

Sony also indicates that the SmartBand will have some sort of audio or even video recording capability: “Special moments need special attention. A great restaurant. An amazing song. A beautiful sunset. Press the Life Bookmark key on your SmartBand and everything going on at that moment will be caught and remembered forever.” Shhh. Did you hear that? That’s the sound of the NSA getting aroused.

Knowing that the SmartBand is designed to track your daily life, Sony wisely made the device waterproof and gave it a discreet look. You can even take the electronics (dubbed the “Core”)  itself and insert it into another wristband. The SmartBand will come with two wristbands and I’m sure Sony will only be too happy to sell you more wristbands in all sorts of colors and themes.

Ready to spy on yourself? Tom’s Guide says the SmartBand will be available this spring for €99. That’s about $135 (USD), but I wouldn’t be surprised if it launches at $99 in the United States.
