Covry Sunwear makes sunglasses that are made to fit Asian faces

If you’re Asian, you probably know the difficulty of finding a pair of sunglasses that actually fits.

With our high cheekbones and low nose bridges, glasses seem to constantly fall down our faces, only to sit too tightly on our cheeks.

Well, a new sunglasses brand has the answer to all of our problems. Started by high school friends Athina Wang, 25, and Florence Shin, 24, Covry Sunwear goes beyond the standard fit to better complement diverse facial features.

We were both frustrated with not being able to find sunglasses that fit us,” Shin told “We always felt like we had to compromise the style, the fit, or the price.”

Using their backgrounds in fashion design and business, the duo developed a prototype over a year before coming up with the “Elevated Fit,” which features longer nose pads, reduced frame curvature and a narrowed nose bridge. They chose this name over “Asian Fit” because they realized people of all ethnicities also struggle with the same issues.

Covry offers three styles: The Castor, Lynx and Vega, all of which are unisex and UV protected with polarized lenses and reduced glares. And the best part? They’re actually stylish, unlike the “Asian Fit” glasses offered by other brands.

And it looks like tapping into this underrepresented market has paid off — Covry’s Kickstarter campaign has surpassed their goal of $18,500 and their stretch goal of $25,000. Now, customers can sign up at to be notified as soon as they’re available to shop. They’ll retail for $95 each.

We’re hoping that this solves sunglasses shopping, an experience that isn’t inclusive of everyone,” Wang told Mashable.

Sony SmartEyeGlasses are technologically advanced but stylistically questionable

Sony announced its foray into smart glasses last September, and now we get the first look at the development of “SmartEyeGlasses,” a transparent lens eyewear that connects with smartphones to superimpose information onto the real world, such as symbols, text and images. The eyepiece is equipped with a diverse range of sensor technologies such as a CMOS image sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, electronic compass, microphone and more.

The augmented reality accessory aims to give the user information about their current status, acting as a live feed of necessary information that appears in your field of view. The “SmartEyeGlasses” utilizes unique hologram optics to achieve a lens that is capable of a high transparency of 85% with just a 0.3mm thickness. Technologically, the glasses are advanced with huge potential, however, aesthetically, they may be more reminiscent of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle than someone tech-savvy. The glasses will be available in some countries beginning March 2015, but check out the video above.

Self-healing glasses on sale next year in Japan

Starting on 1 January, 2015 Vision Megane will begin selling their strongest frames to date. Dubbed the Super Taflex, it boasts extreme resistance to bending and stretching and also claims to be able to heal itself from everyday dents and scratches within ten seconds.

This healing ability comes from the frame’s “cross guard coating,” which according to their diagram is like a springy chain link fence which pops back to its original shape seconds after small ebony spheres have hurled towards it. This ability is said to work against any scratch that might occur in daily life as well.

Of course, glasses-wearers are probably more concerned about damage to the lens than the frame, but this is still definitely a step in the right direction. These frames are also forged with a special material known as Ultem, which has been used in spacecraft parts because of its extreme resilience under stress while retaining a light weight.

Super Taflex frames will be available in four styles all priced at 22,800 yen (US$190). So for all you out there working in the small ebony sphere factories across the globe, your prayers will be answered in a mere mater of weeks.

In their latest publication, End Clothing has styled select pieces from prominent Japanese streetwear brand NEIGHBORHOOD‘s latest 2014 Fall/Winter effort. The overall collection is heavily rooted in historic American culture. Samples borrow motifs from vintage ranch wear, which is then featured on a cohesive set of pieces including shirts, tees, and denim.

Active wear is also given attention, as seen with the American football inspired coach jacket, shirts, and tees. The lookbook is rounded out with the assistance of Japanese eyewear company Effector, who offer a range of boxy silhouette lens to complete each look, taking cues from the American “school boy” aesthetic.
