20 celebrities you didn’t know were Asian

Audrey Magazine (Ethel Navales):

Not all Asians look the same.  I repeat, not all Asians look the same. It seems no matter how many times we say it, people simply assume that all Asians share the same physical features. Some believe we all have the same body structure and others even think we all have the same kind of hair. Of course, we know this is absurd. We know that there are plenty of ethnicities which categorize under the umbrella term “Asian” and we know there are plenty of Asians who are of mixed race. So why do people think all Asians look the alike? Well it may have a thing or two to do with media’s portrayal of Asians. If audiences have only been exposed to a very particular type of Asian, how can they know we’re all different? This lack of exposure may be the very reason many celebs who are bi-racial or multiracial are often overlooked in the Asian community. Even if they don’t necessarily “look it,” all of the following celebrities are Asian.

Check out this list of 20 Asian celebs you probably didn’t know were Asian.

Vanessa Hudgens to play Rizzo in FOX’s live broadcast musical ‘Grease’

Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 4.33.34 PM

 Audrey Magazine:

It seems that the musical bug will not stop biting Vanessa Hudgens. Less than a week after her debut as Gigi at the Kennedy Center, Fox announced that Hudgens will be playing Rizzo, the loud-mouthed pink lady in a live musical broadcast of GreaseIn the original film, Rizzo was portrayed by actress Stockard Channing.

Fox is attempting to follow NBC’s footsteps by creating updated versions of classic musicals and broadcasting them on live television. NBC’s previous musical, Peter Pan, aired in December.

Hudgens is simply “cranked” (that’s how you said “excited” in the 1950’s) on becoming a sassy pink lady.

Playing Rizzo is something I never imagined. I love that, because it will be a new challenge. I cannot wait to bring her to life on live television. I am going to be a pink lady!”

Hudgens will be starring alongside Julianne Hough, who will play goody-two-shoes Sandy. Fox has yet to announce the rest of the cast, but it is rumored that Hudgens’ ex-boyfriend and High School Musical co-star, Zac Efron, may play Danny Zucko. Perhaps that awkward situation may help Hudgens get into her bad-girl character?

Grease is expected to premiere on January 31, 2016.

Vanessa Hudgens to star in Broadway musical ‘Gigi’

 Audrey Magazine:

Vanessa Hudgens will sing and dance her way into the hearts of viewers once again. But this time, it won’t be a high school musical. Much to the excitement of her fans, Hudgens announced last fall that she would be starring in the Broadway adaptation of Gigi. Finally, it’s here.

Hudgens, who is best known for her role as Gabriella Montez in Disney’s High School Musical, is taking a step outside mainstream Hollywood and entering an entirely different world by portraying a young French girl in the early 1900s. This seems to spark controversy and dislike among longtime Gigi fans because of Vanessa’s ethnicity. However, the Filipino-American actress won’t let negativity dull her excitement.

In the behind the scenes video below, Hudgens says Gigi “sits so deeply in who I am.”

Based on the 1944 novel by the late French writer, Colette, the story focuses on Gigi, a young girl from Paris who is trying to discover her true self. She becomes a courtesan while experiencing a blossoming relationship with a wealthy man named Gaston. Gigi opens Friday, January 16 at the Kennedy Center.
