Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky presents Benjamin Von Wong’s “Underwater River”

For the fifth installment of its “Stay True” collaborative series, following projects with graffiti artist INSA and DJ-producer Black Coffee, Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky partners with “hyper-real” photographer Benjamin Von Wong for a unique underwater experience. Floating 30 meters down in an ancient Mexican sinkhole is a cloud-like layer of hydrogen sulphide which separates salt and fresh water to create a unique visual phenomenon – an underwater river.

Inspired by this natural phenomena, along with a desire to celebrate his Chinese heritage, his beliefs and his deeply ingrained passion for experimentation, Benjamin set to work with Ballantine’s to create these seemingly impossible underwater images – a stunning, contemporary recreation of a fading ancient tradition, the Chinese Cormorant Fisherman.

After four months of intensive planning and research, across three continents, a special team comprised of some of the world’s most experienced divers, set builders, underwater filmmakers and even a record-breaking free-diver descended on the Mexican jungle for five days to undertake a challenge none of them had ever before contemplated.

POW! WOW! Taiwan 2014 Video

After taking Taipei by storm, the POW! WOW! team takes a look back at its first-ever venture into Taiwan. Directed by Vincent Ricafort, this lengthy recap of POW! WOW! Taiwan 2014 does well to highlight its quest to paint massive murals in the Taiwanese capital, even dealing with typhoons as the festival brought together street art heavyweights like Aaron De La Cruz, Apex, Dabs1, INSA, James Jean, Brendan Monroe, and Madsteez, as well as regional talents Reach, Mr.OGAY, Seazk, Saym, Zishi, Xue, and Vita Yang.

Enjoy the piece above and head on over to POW! WOW!’s blog for a slide show of some imagery from the event.

INSA x MADSTEEZ “TaiWEENtillian” Mural for POW! WOW! Taiwan

A merging of two dynamic styles, INSA and MADSTEEZ recently teamed up to paint a large mural at this year’s POW! WOW! Taiwan. As part of the British artist’s ongoing animated “GIF-ITI” series, the duo followed a calculated sequence, painting eight individual frames in the course of a few days.

Taking to the wall of Tatung University, INSA’s bold line-work and fetish motifs complemented MADSTEEZ’S four-eyed WEENT!LL!AN character, presenting a unique piece filled with an Eastern sensibility.

INSA and Evisu collaborate and introduce the “Daicock Raw Denim Jeans”

British artist and designer INSA recently collaborated with Osaka-based denim brand EVISU to produce a special capsule collection of two limited-edition pairs of denim. Presented here is their take on Evisu’s Daicock Raw Denim Jeans which also drew on the talents of British designer Alex Noble. Available in a tapered fit for men and a skinny fit for women, both feature the artist’s signature vibrant paint drip graffiti effect on both the front and back while incorporating the Daicock design.

INSA had this to say about the concept: “It’s a mix of fashion, fetish and art, pushing the idea of a commodity seen as a fetishized object – in this case, luxury denim – and using the fabric itself to express this, and referencing the style of traditional Shibari is a nod to Evisu’s Japanese heritage.  It was a true pleasure to collaborate on the novelty piece with designer Alex Noble – I feel we both understand the sublimation of extreme fashion to artistic expression.

Limited to 300 pairs of each, the Daicock Raw Denim Jeans are currently available for purchase over at EVISU’s new flagship store on Wellington Street, Central in Hong Kong as well as online through at Evisu’s website. The male edition of the jeans is priced at $539 USD and the female pair at $489 USD.
