Thousands show up to Ani-Com & Games Fair in Hong Kong

Channel NewsAsia:

Thousands of comic book fans, gamers and cosplayers are thronging the 17th Ani-Com & Games Fair in Hong Kong. Organisers are hoping to beat last year’s attendance of more than 720,000 people.

About 100 die-hard comic book fans and gamers camped out overnight ahead of the fair. Previous years saw larger crowds wanting to score limited edition merchandise, which organizers have since banned.

At the head of the queue was a fan eagerly awaiting a deluxe edition of his favourite videogame. “I’m here for the Playstation’s latest Metal Gear Solid video game. This year, I’ve set aside about US$1,000 to spend,” said Mr Chan.

There are also many comic characters coming to life. Cosplayer Paul Ho said: “We’re the crazy, crazy people. We take annual leave and come to the Comicon Hong Kong to support society, support the positives. I always say, you have heart, you can be the superhero.”

Mr Ho, an event organiser, paraded around the fair with friends in home-made costumes, inspired by the Avengers movie.

The dark side of the force was also strong when its most famous Sith Lord made an appearance. One would also likely need a second garage to fit a 1/6 scale of the Millennium Falcon spacecraft, which needs no introduction to Star Wars fans.

A Millennium Falcon movdel from the Star Wars is displayed at the 17th Ani-Com and Games exhibition in Hong Kong.

Hot Toys, a Hong Kong-based company that produces high-end figurines coveted worldwide, build the highly detailed model, which is 18-feet by 12-feet in size.

“We built it because we’re die-hard fans of Star Wars, we want people to love Star Wars, and that’s why we built it, but it’s not for sale,” said Chere Li, marketing manager at Hot Toys.

What is for sale and is its bestseller is the Iron Man Hulkbuster action figure that was featured on the big screen recently.

Channel NewsAsia‘s Hong Kong Bureau Chief Roland Lim also had the chance to test a product that is not out in the market yet. Sony‘s virtual reality headset, codenamed Project Morpheus, will not be ready until next year and Sony is planning for 30 games to come with it.

Hong Kong is the first in Asia for gamers to play Star Wars Battlefront, while Microsoft has set up a special wall with 200 car models to celebrate the 10th anniversary of racing game Forza.

The convention runs until Tuesday.

Custom leather armors inspired by iconic characters make for some unique cosplay

RocketNews 24:

Cosplay that looks exactly like the source material is so yesterday’s news. Nowadays plenty of people take a character and use their basic look and color scheme to design a whole new costume never seen before.

People who are looking to go a little medieval with their costumes and aren’t leatherworking experts should probably look to Prince Armory, who design and create uniquely amazing sets of leather armor. Their finished pieces look so gorgeous you’ll probably want to refer to them as art. Art that could probably stop a knife, that is.

Prince Armory has been creating custom hand crafted armor, costumes and leather products since 2007. What began as a business that was almost exclusively custom one-off items has blossomed into full sets of leather armor commissioned by their patrons.

While much of their work is inspired by fantasy and medieval settings, a few of their pieces have dipped into modern-day geekery.

Besides Iron Man, their customers have commissioned medieval inspired costumes based on characters such as Darth Vader, Marvel’s Loki, DC’s Batman and the Joker and even the Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy.

Samsung unveils the Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 Edge

Further to its teaser, Samsung has released a limited edition of its Galaxy S6 Edge in the distinctive red-and-gold livery of Marvel superhero Iron Man, as a promotion for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The 64GB model features red brushed metal body accented with gold along the peripheral frame as well as around the camera lens and home button, and comes packaged with an “arc reactor” wireless charging pad. The Iron Man theme continues with a special skin to spice up the UI experience. However, the lack of J.A.R.V.I.S. leaves a conspicuous absence, with only Google Now to make up for it.

First releasing in South Korea on May 27, the phone will make its way to China and Hong Kong in June. In the meanwhile, watch the unboxing video below.

RocketNews 24:

China is known as an industrious nation and, after pictures surfaced of one Chinese teacher who built a phenomenal “Iron Man” Hulkbuster replica in his garage, it seemed like the right time to take a look at some of the country’s most impressive home made inventions.

From full size, working airplanes to wooden, yet electronic cars, the Chinese have spent anything from a couple of months to several years, knocking up some pretty impressive modes of transports and robots.

Liu Fulong from the Shenyang, Liaoning province created a wooden electronic vehicle at home, which has a top speed of 30km/h.liu-fulong-from-the-shenyang-liaoning-province-created-a-wooden-electronic-vehicle-at-home-which-has-a-top-speed-of-30kmh

Sailors assemble! Artist reimagines the cast of Sailor Moon as Marvel’s Avengers

RocketNews 24:

SA 4

No one was really that shocked when Sailor Moon became a hit with its target market of little girls shortly after the anime started airing in 1992. Nor was anyone’s mind completely blown when the show started attracting older female viewers too, since its script had plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor mixed with some honestly compelling drama.

The big surprise, though, was just how many guys the show pulled in, as Sailor Moon built a male fan base of unprecedented size for what was ostensibly an anime for girls. While the central cast of five leggy ladies in sailor skirts obviously didn’t hurt, another key point in breaking down the barrier of entry for male viewers was the high quantity of action scenes in which Sailor Moon and her partners battled villains using their command of fire, thunder, and other awesome powers.

Looked at from that perspective, Sailor Moon isn’t so different from an American comic superhero team like The Avengers, something hammered home by this impressive crossover fan art.

The drawings were produced by artist Jei Shepard, who’s a fan of comics and video game originating on both sides of the Pacific. Not surprisingly, Jei, who also produces artwork on commission, lists The Avengers and the Sailor Senshi as two of her favorite ensemble casts, so she decided to combine the two. Rather than decking out the mighty men of Marvel in pleats and frills, Shepard instead chose to reimagine the Sailors as the members of the U.S. publisher’s hottest team.

Despite her crybaby tendencies, there’s no denying that when the chips are down, Sailor Moon stands up for what she believes in. Straightforward and honest, it’s easy to see why Shepard chose the series’ protagonist to suit up in this Captain America-inspired uniform.

SA 1

As the only Avenger whose superpower is “technology,” it’s obvious that the smartest of the Sailors should be the one to step into Iron Man’s shoes, so the job goes to girl genius Sailor Mercury, who’s repainted the suit to match her hair.

SA 2

Hawkeye gets a lot of flak for being one of the least intimidating Avengers. While Iron Man’s blasting foes with lasers and the Hulk is smashing them with his elementary school student-sized fists, Hawkeye has…a really nice compound bow?

Just think how much more fear the team could strike into the hearts of evildoers by replacing Hawkeye with Sailor Mars, who can make arrows out of fire.

SA 3

You could argue that since they both have green as their image color, Sailor Jupiter should be the Hulk. The fourth member of Sailor Moon’s squad is far too feminine to serve as a stand-in for the angry giant though. Not only that, she masters a number of lightning-based attacks as the series goes on, such as the Supreme Thunder Dragon, making her a perfect substitute for Thor, the God of Thunder.

SA 4

Finally, we come to Sailor Venus, who takes over for Black Widow. This is another sensible choice, as Black Widow is the only woman to fight alongside the Avengers in their recent Hollywood blockbuster, and within the Sailor Moon anime Venus is often referred to as being the most overtly feminine of the Sailor Senshi.
