Artist Profile: KAWS “CLEAN SLATE” Exhibition at Harbour City Hong Kong

Image of KAWS “CLEAN SLATE” Exhibition @ Harbour City Hong Kong Recap

After giving a quick preview at the KAWS “CLEAN SLATE” exhibition earlier on this week, we now go in for a better look at the two-part installation at Harbour City, Hong Kong. On the outside forecourt we see the seven meter-tall KAWS “CLEAN SLATE” sculpture, a gesture towards starting afresh; the iconic COMPANION is back on his feet ready to start something new — only this time he is carrying two smaller COMPANIONS along with him.

Along with the outdoor installation, a special selection of KAWS prints are also exhibited at the Gallery by the Harbour, located just a floor above. Those traveling to Hong Kong from now until October 19 will be fortunate enough to catch to two-part exhibition on display — it would be best to go in the early morning or during the late hours to avoid a crowd.

In 2010, Hong Kong’s Harbour City presented KAWS first exhibition in the city titled “Passing Through.” On September 18, the New York artist will unveil a follow-up exhibition titled “CLEAN SLATE” — a new monumental sculpture measuring out to seven meters tall. Joining other companion characters seen in past exhibitions across the world  – such as recent showings at “Final Days” at CAC Malaga and “Along The Way” at Mary Boone Gallery — “CLEAN SLATE” is one the largest sculpture KAWS has ever made and shows the companion figure on both feet holding a smaller rendering in his arms – signifying a new chapter in the companion series.

CLEAN STATE” will be on view from September 18 to 19 at Ocean Terminal Forecourt of Harbour City.

Art News: KAWS will unveil the 23-Foot ‘CLEAN SLATE’ statue in Hong Kong next month

Image of KAWS Will Unveil the 23-Foot 'CLEAN SLATE' Statue in Hong Kong Next Month

Several years ago, KAWS made a massive impression in Asia through his PASSING THROUGH Companion statue that originally kicked off in Hong Kong. The massive Companion eventually made its way across the United States and Paris, becoming an important piece of the KAWS legacy.

Next month,KAWS will return to Harbour City in Hong Kong to unveil his latest statue, CLEAN SLATE. Measuring in at 7 meters (approximately 23 feet), CLEAN SLATE will be KAWS’s largest effort yet as it also includes two Companions being carried within the arms of a larger Companion. The piece signifies starting over in a new life. The exhibition between KAWS and Harbour City was produced by AllRightsReserved who else served as the catalyst for the previous PASSING THROUGH project.

CLEAN SLATE will be showcased at Harbour City’s forecourt between September 18 and October 19.

“BIBO”: Hong Kong street art restaurant by Substance

Hong Kong restaurant “BIBO” has recently been unveiled, boasting an interior designed by creative agency Substance and furnished with a jaw-dropping curation of street art. KAWS’ Companion sits alongside pieces by Shephard FaireyBanksyInvaderDamien HirstMr. BrainwashDaniel Arsham and JR, in a space that resembles a Parisian diner-cum-art gallery.

In order to tie in the French cuisine on offer with contemporary street art, a new history for the building was created – the abandoned regional headquarters of the fictional “Compagnie Générale Française de Tramways” (CGFT). Things like furniture, train timetables and unused ticket rolls are included as part of the design, inviting the new inhabitants, squatters and artists who gather in the vacated building to share food and ideas. Subway ventilation systems are hinted at through brass pipes while complex light fixtures appear as train signal lights. Abandoned construction sites are referenced through the bars, which are crafted from layers of unevenly stacked marble, with individual dining tables created from misaligned stone slabs.

Take a look inside the space above and be sure to pay the diner a visit should you ever be on Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road.

Interior Design: KAWS’ Brooklyn studio by Wonderwall (Japan)

Image of KAWS Studio by Wonderwall
Japanese architectural firm Wonderwall has revealed its work for artist KAWS‘ studio in Brooklyn. Transforming the interior of the red brick building, Wonderwall created a light-filled work space that looks more like a gallery than a studio. Gracing many of the walls is a selection of art, many by the artist himself, as well as more prosaic things like art supplies.
On the second level, the office spaces open up to a large balcony with a view over the surrounding neighborhood.
Check out the space here and see more at Wonderwall.
