Hong Kong toy designer Michael Lau collaborates with PORTER (Japan) for the 80th Anniversary “P8orter Boy” 12-Inch Figure

Esteemed Japanese luggage brand PORTER celebrates its 80th anniversary with the help of Hong Kong toy designer, Michael Lau. The multi-faceted Michael Lau reinterprets PORTER’s iconic mascot through his own lens and that of his ongoing GARDENER character series — something seen through both art and toys. GARDENER characters often include strong angular features and a fully poseable frame. The “P8orter Boy” uses the same dress and accompanying luggage that is often seen attached to the tags of Porter product.

A limited run of 800 figures will be available directly through Porter.

After first launching late last year, Hong Kong lifestyle store GUMGUMGUM has re-opened its doors after moving to a new similar space further down the street from its former location. The new location features artwork from artist Michael Lau and several other local creatives. In addition to bringing back its stock of curated items, the shop is showing love for the local scene, introducing a new concept restaurant selling local Hong Kong specialties, called GUM JENG (Cantonese for “so fine.”)

To stay up-to-date with the shop, check out the GUMGUMGUM page on Facebook.

Stepping away from vinyl toy designs, Michael Lau returns to his roots of painting and illustrating in his fourth solo exhibition “remember-disc · time-table.” Coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong, the show consists of 44 mixed-media pieces that build from artistic expressions and quotes that have inspired him.

Divided into three groups: wood, canvas and stainless steel, each piece is symbolic of time, with the circular wood discs and canvases calling to mind the shape of a clock, and the use of stainless steel medium for its resistance to corrosion and the stand against the test of time. From sculpting to pencil drawings and acrylic paintings, the all encompassing collection sees Lau steer away from the iconographies of subculture in exploration of memory and personal experiences.

The exhibition is showing from now till June 1 at GUMGUMGUM’s pop-up gallery.

Widely known as “the godfather of urban vinyl,” artist Michael Lau presents his latest exhibition: “remember-disc · time-table.”

Combining his roots in painting with his signature three-dimensional touch, the exhibit reflects an artistic expression of different quotes – whether they be short book summarizations or summations of experience filtered by great minds. Ultimately, Lau encourages viewers to reflect on the thoughts we have yet to put into action as time slowly slips away.

Michael Lau’s “remember-disc · time-table” – featuring 44 pieces that pair memory-inspired discs with tables that are sculpturally symbolic of a finite “timetable” – opens May 15 in Hong Kong and will remain on display through June 1.

Known for his close collaborative relationship with Nike, local Hong Kong artist Michael Lau recently opened a shop of his own called Gum Gum Gum. The name is a transliteration of the Cantonese word which basically works as the filler ‘Like…’ in English.

The lifestyle store will act as a pop-up store location, exhibition and special event space. If you’re in the area, check it out in person or visit the store online here.
