Audrey Magazine:

Not all Asians look the same. I repeat, not all Asians look the same.

It seems no matter how many times we say it, people simply assume that all Asians share the same physical features. Some believe we all have the same body structure and others even think we all have the same kind of hair.

Of course, we know this is absurd. We know that there are plenty of ethnicities which categorize under the umbrella term “Asian” and we know there are plenty of Asians who are of mixed race. So why do people think all Asians look the alike?

Well it may have a thing or two to do with media’s portrayal of Asians. If audiences have only been exposed to a very particular type of Asian, how can they know we’re all different? This lack of exposure may be the very reason many celebs who are bi-racial or multiracial often become overlooked in the Asian community.

Even if they don’t necessarily “look it,” all of the following celebrities are Asian.

Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar will perform at the Mayor of London‘s Diwali Festival to be held at Trafalgar Square here on October 27.

The daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, who passed away last year, will play a set that will include tracks from “Traces Of You“, the new album she recorded with composer Nitin Sawhney and her half-sister Norah Jones.

Anoushka is part of an exciting line-up being brought for the free event in Trafalgar Square by Mayor Boris Johnson along with media partner Zee and the Diwali in London Committee.

I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful event and am excited about performing for the multi-cultural crowds of London during this beautiful festival,” she said.

It feels really special to me to be connected to Diwali in London especially as I was born here and recently moved back to the city.”

Anoushka Shankar And Norah Jones: Half-Sisters Collaborate At Last

norah-anoushka-grammy

Anoushka Shankar began playing sitar with her famous father, the late Ravi Shankar, when she was 4. But until recently, she’d never entered a studio with her other famous relative, half-sister Norah Jones.

When the two met up in New York recently to work on a new song together, a spooky thing happened: Working off Shankar’s lyrics, Jones devised a tune that sounded remarkably similar to one their father had written in 1955 for the acclaimed Bengali film Pather Panchali.

And when I said that to her, I was surprised to find out that she’d never heard that melody before,” Anoushka Shankar says. “And it just felt like a lovely affirmation that we were on the right track.

That song, “Unsaid,” is one of several collaborations on Shankar’s new album, Traces of You. She discusses the making of the record with NPR’s Arun Rath.
