Preorders finally start for Cat Ear Headphones

Last summer, were you one of the many people who screamed “Shut up and take my money!” when we brought you news of the prototype cat ear-shaped headphone/speakers from recent startup AxentWear? If so, your harshly worded enthusiasm has been rewarded, as preorders have at last begun for the futuristically feline gadgets.

Back in June, California-based startup Axent Wear was preparing for its crowdfunding campaign through website Indiegogo. Given the amount of buzz/meowing the concept artwork alone had generated, we predicted University of California Berkley graduates Victoria Hu and Wenqing Yan would have no trouble getting the resources they needed, and we were right. The pair set their original target at US $250,000, but ended up raising more than 10 times that amount, eventually ending up with US$2.9 million to fund their endeavor, thanks in part to the pitch video they produced, and, we like to think, because of certain awesome news sites that helped get the word out.

If you’re the kind of person who’s keen to strap on what looks like a pair of cybernetic cat ears in public, odds are you’re not the ultra-introverted type. If you’re interested in sharing not just your fashion sense but also your taste in music with those around you, the ear portions of the headphones also function as speakers.

Axent Wear officially announced the headphones would be going into production last November. Until now, they were only available through the company’s Indiegogo page, found here. As of this month, though, they can also be ordered here through Japanese retailer Domore Shop, in your choice of blue, red, green, or purple.

Granted, Domore’s 27,000-yen (US$225) price tag is a little higher than the $170 Axent Wear quotes on its Indiegogo page. Domore’s expected delivery date of September 2015 is also a couple of months behind Indiegogo’s estimated April.

Price and delivery quibbles aside, though, we’re happy to see Axent Wear’s distribution network grow as large as it can. After all, given that a year ago there wasn’t even a single place where you could buy these awesome cat ear headphones, we think it’s pretty cool that now there are two.

Monster CEO Noel Lee files fraud lawsuit against Apple-owned Beats

The HTC deal was a “sham transaction” to “exclude Monster and Lee from future profits from the sale of the “Beats By Dr. Dre” product line and, ultimately, the sale of Beats as a company, to Apple,” the suit alleges.

Having severed ties with Monster and approving the acquisition by Apple, the Beats executives “made millions off the work of Lee and Monster,” the suit says. And since Beats “misappropriated the ‘Beats By Dr. Dre” technology and manufacturing and distribution channels, Monster and Lee lost millions of dollars,” the complaint says.

In the aftermath, “I came to realize that I think I’ve been duped,” Lee said during the interview here.

Apple declined to comment on the lawsuit and Beats has not responded to a request for comment.

Beyond the financial and intellectual property harms that Monster and Lee claim, they also say that Beats aims to “deceptively rewrite history” by erasing Monster’s participation in the rise of the premium headphone lineup.

Beats co-founder Iovine is described in the suit as “a respected but ruthless music mogul.” As for Dre, “other than his celebrity status as a rapper, Dre’s primary contribution was to bless Monster’s headphones when he exclaimed: ‘That’s the shit!’” the suit says.

That’s one of the reasons for filing the suit, Lee said. “To right the record.”

The U.S. headphone market amounted to about $2 billion in 2014, according to The NPD Group, with half made up by premium products such as Beats By Dr. Dre. Beats has about 60% of the premium market, compared with Monster’s single-digit percentage.

As the smaller company, Monster is trying to strike back at Beats, which is now attached to Apple, NPD analyst Ben Arnold said. The move could also be an effort to help Monster “gain market share,” he said.

Samsung has tackled just about every kind of speaker you can imagine, but it hasn’t had an answer to hot-selling 360-degree speakers like the UE Boom. Well, that changes today: the Korean firm has unveiled the WAM6500 and WAM7500, its first compact one-piece speakers to promise room-filling sound. Both center around a “ring radiator” that pipes audio in every direction while supposedly striking a careful balance between bass and treble. If you ask us, though, they’re as much about the “premium” styling as anything else. The portable 6500 (above) looks like the kettle from an avant garde kitchen, while the tabletop-oriented 7500 (below) could easily double as a 31st-century desk lamp. Samsung hasn’t divulged pricing, but these fashion-forward designs will likely command a premium.

On top of this, the tech giant is expanding its Curved Soundbar range to accommodate the wider range of curved TVs it has in store. The 6000, 6500 and 8500 series join the 7500 line, and they’ll give you curvy audio for sets in sizes ranging from 45 to 78 inches. If you splurge on the 8500, you’ll also get a “wider” 9.1-channel surround sound effect courtesy of three extra speakers. There’s no word as to how much these new soundbars will cost, although history suggests that you’ll find out shortly before they ship.

After previewing its line of premium headphones several months ago, Samsung has unveiled its full line of Level audio products. The line includes over-the-ear and on-the-ear headphones, earphones, and a Bluetooth-enabled portable speaker.

Samsung’s Level Over looks to make an impact in the audio market by competitively pricing the product at $350 USD, while the On-Ear headphones come in at $180 USD. As for the in-ear wired earphones, they come in at $150 USD, while the Level Box speaker will retail for $170 USD.

The Samsung Level line is now exclusively available at Gilt for just under a week before it is released at retailers, including Best Buy on July 27.

Today the new collaboration between Opening Ceremony and B&O PLAY was announced. The special team-up revolves around a limited edition of the iconic Form 2i headphones that were originally launched in 1985 by the iconic Danish brand. Only recently B&O PLAY re-launched the headphones with an added microphone, remote and improved comfort design.
The Opening Ceremony-designed version of Form 2i is a modern and clean take on what can truly be classified as a design icon. Originally unveiled back in January of 2013 as CES in Las Vegas, Sony‘s completely waterproof Walkman design has reentered the limelight thanks to the tech giant’s latest campaign with draftfcb. Highlighting its 100% waterproof design, the 4GB MP3 players can now be found in bottles of water in vending machines – thus repurposing the humble and ubiquitous machine for one of the more unique sales portals around. Said draftfcb’s Kevin Walker:

We needed to get it somewhere swimmers couldn’t ignore it – right where they needed it the most. So we hijacked something they’ll find in every fitness center the world over: vending machines. In order to do this, we placed the product in bottled water, something else every swimmer needs, and in doing so created the perfect product demonstration.
