Nissan builds an origami car to celebrate the fifth birthday of its Juke crossover

RocketNews 24 (by Casey Baseel):

It’s been five years since Nissan launched its compact Juke SUV/crossover, and the company is celebrating with a very special fifth anniversary edition: a full-size origami model.

Oftentimes, auto manufacturers will mark the round-number birthdays of their best-sellers with a special paint color or extra badging. Nissan, though, instead enlisted English origami artist Owen Gildersleeve to make a paper Juke to commemorate the milestone.

Unfortunately, this special car is a one-off, so you won’t find one waiting in the inventory lot of your local Nissan dealer. But if we ever find ourselves in the market for a Juke, and if Nissan is offering “origami” as a factory option at that time, we’ll be tempted to check that box when placing our order.

A remarkably restored 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43

Originally started as a clone to the infamous Jeep construction during the Second World War, the Toyota Land Cruiser 4 x 4 went on to garner a reputation for being one of the industry’s toughest off-road vehicles. Having experienced many aesthetic and technological changes the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43 forms part of the company’s better known vintage series and has since gained notable footing in the realm of collectible automotive products over the last twenty plus years.

Restored by The FJ Company, the FJ43 features an extended wheelbase, 3878cc OHV inline 6-cylinder engine and a pale blue color palette fitting to the dated aesthetic of its predecessors. Completed with a contrasting full-leather interior, detachable canvas canopy and chrome fittings, the 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43 is scheduled to be auctioned on August 14 with an expected price tag of between $80,000 and $100,000 USD – more information can be found directly at the Bonhams auction site.

This Chinese Tesla killer has a fish tank in the back seat!

RocketNews 24/Business Insider:

The Tesla Model X will be terrific and Google’s autonomous egg car will change the world.

But neither can match the awesomeness of China’s GAC WitStar that was introduced this week at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Not only does China’s Model X lookalike feature a range-extended electric powertrain and autonomous drive capabilities — it’s also equipped with a fish tank!

That’s right — a fish tank! Not since the heyday of “Pimp My Ride” have we seen such aquatic awesomeness in an car. An automotive aquarium! And all of this at the Detroit Auto Show no less.

The WitStar is the latest concept from Guangzhou-based GAC Motors. The futuristic crossover SUV is built on a sedan platform and has a electric driving range of more than 62 miles, reports Motor Trend. When the 13 kWh lithium-ion battery runs dry, the WitStar’s onboard 1.0 liter four-cylinder gasoline power generator will kick in — Chevy Volt-style — to extend the total range to 370 miles. This powertrain setup is expected to achieve 117 mpg.

In addition to the hybrid-electric powertrain, the WitStar’s lineup of autonomous drive tech is also pretty darn impressive. According to Motor Trend, the car will be equipped with a self-driving system featuring laser radar, a high-speed CCD camera, and infrared camera, and GPS.

The car magazine further reports that all data gathered by the sensors, cameras, and GPS system will be amalgamated to create a real-time 3D map of the area around the vehicle. The information will also be used to control various vehicle drive functions, such as acceleration, steering, and braking. Pretty cool.

As for the fish tank, it’s located between the concept’s rear seats, in place of the armrest. Thankfully, GAC decided to used plastic fish instead of the real thing.

Because the last thing anyone wants to see is dead goldfish floating around a concept car.

The fish tank is the attention-getting feature of the WitStar interior. However, the overall pleasantness of the concept’s “lounge-style” interior shouldn’t be discounted. Everything looks sleek, futuristic, and surprisingly restrained.

The WitStar’s defining exterior feature is the pair of massive, Tesla Model X-esque gullwing doors. (Tesla prefers to call them “falcon wings” on the X).

GAC is one of China’s largest automakers. The company currently markets a line of passenger vehicles under the Trumpchi brand. GAC also operates multiple joint-venture manufacturing operations in conjunction with Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Fiat.

Nissan Kicks concept SUV

Nissan recently took to the 2014 Sao Paulo International Motor Show to unveil its latest concept vehicle: the Kicks. Marking the company’s second-ever design exploration in Brazil — following 2012′s EXTREM — the Kicks represents what could eventually be a new model tailored for the emerging South American market. Led by Nissan’s global design center in Japan and created as a collaboration between California-based Nissan Design America and Nissan Design America Rio, the vehicle balances design cues from both a compact SUV and performance car.

The result is a sleek crossover, full wraparound glass, 19-inch six-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, a blunt vertical front end, a V-motion grille, boomerant lights, and floating roof. Said Nissan’s Executive Design Director, Mamoru Aoki:

“Brazil has a mix of people and cultures that blends a range of styles, flavors and tastes. In developing the Kicks concept, we sought to create a design that is both aspirational yet attainable –- a vehicle that is rugged enough to handle the reality of Brazilian back roads, but that is sporty, sophisticated, and business-like with year-round utility… Where the stance of the Nissan Frontier pickup might be compared to a power lifter and the Nissan GT-R to a world-class sprinter, the Kicks concept is more like a Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter –- coiled for action and precise in every movement.”

Toyota to bring cack the Land Cruiser 70 for one year only in Japan

Toyota is set to bring back its iconic LAND CRUISER 70 for one final hurrah. The catch? It will only be available in Japan and for one year only. The rugged off-roader traces its origins back to 1984, when Toyota introduced the SUV to its domestic market, and while production for Japan may have ceased 10 years ago, it has remained a fixture in many smaller markets.

Now in its 30th year, the design is being revived with a few modern tweaks, mainly to the front end and the interior, and will also be available in a pick-up variant as well as the traditional closed body.

Check out the video to see more of this legendary vehicle.
